Dancing to the tunes of India: Ethnic Communities Minister Jenny Salesa with the community

Members of various communities in Auckland joined their counterparts of Indian origin to mark the 71st Republic Day of India on January 26, 2020.

They danced to the patriotic and popular songs of India, greeted each other and wished India continued progress and prosperity at the celebrations organised by Bhartiya Samaj Charitable Trust at Mount Roskill War Memorial Hall.

A flag-hoisting ceremony, prayers for ‘Bharat Mata’ (Mother India) and exchange of pleasantries were among the highlights of the event, which also brought together senior members of the community who have found comfort and solace at Bhartiya Samaj since its formation in 1995.

Editor’s Note: The Silver Jubilee year of Bhartiya Samaj commenced with its annual Summer Camp held at the same venue from January 13 to January 17, 2020.

Inclusive Society

The Republic Day Celebrations proved that New Zealand promotes an inclusive society and that Bhartiya Samaj fosters the goodwill among communities.

Welcoming the gathering Trust Chairman Jeet Suchdev highlighted the importance of Republic Day, saying that January 26, 1950 marked the true freedom of India, with its own Constitution, with complete severance from Britain.

He also outlined the activities of Bhartiya Samaj and its services to the community.

Aid to Australia

The progamme included speeches by Ethnic Communities Minister Jenny Salesa, India’s Hon Consul for Auckland Bhav Dillon and a cultural programme with the participation of the Seniors.

The Samaj raised $1000 as a donation to the Australian government, which is currently providing relief and recovery to people affected by the bushfires that raged across the country recently.

The Programme was another milestone achieved by Bhartiya Samaj Charitable Trust in its social and community engagement.
