A Correspondent
It was a rainy evening but the hall of Playhouse Theatre was full.
Staged at Playhouse Theatre in Auckland on July 20, 2019, the Play, called, ‘Karma,’ was about our acts and deeds in this world.
It was about the theory of Geeta: “Karm karo, phal ki ichchha mat karo” (Do your duty, do not desire results) and about the conflict of two generations about their traditional work as Karmkandi (Ritualist) Pandit.
It is about the prophecy of Vadik Parampara and Tradition.
The original play was written in Marathi by Ashutosh Apte.
It was adopted in Hindi by Preeta Vyas, an acclaimed Hindi writer in Auckland.
Piquant engagement
Her script is energetically crammed with incidents and teeming with characters frankly and unambiguously stating their motives and efficiently defining their identities and functions.
The actors delivered the text with sharp-edged assertiveness.
The effect was both piquantly engaging and dishearteningly synthetic, like a well-turned sound effect, one simulating the thud of a screenplay dropped on a desk.
Versatile Actor
The play was directed by Devdatt Paranjape, who has many successful plays to his credit.
Amit Rathod played different roles in ‘Karma.’
Among other members of the cast were Shaival Chakraborti, Rahul Reddy, Vijesh Nangia, Anuj Gaonkar and Sandeep Karne.
The script’s sharpness is found in many places but the last scene was the height where the lead character Bapu (played by Amit Rathod) dies.
It was a fabulous presentation by Euphoria theatres.
