Needle as paintbrush

It will run until April 11, 2021. Entry is free and open to all.

The Embroidery Art Exhibition features ancient Chinese paintings, flowers and birds, oil paintings and portraits created by Hong with her amazing needlework art.

The needle is Ms Yao’s paintbrush, and the threads are the colours. She incorporates thin and thick threads, long and short stitches and different techniques of colour, layering and winding to create combinations of lines with rich expressions. For a two-dimensional embroidery piece, shiny threads with a mix of colours and techniques are used.

About Hong Ying Yao

A senior industrial artist specialising in Suzhou silk embroidery,  Ms Yao was born in Suzhou, the hometown of Chinese silk embroidery. She grew up in a village where almost every woman is a good at embroidering, including her grandmother, mother and sister.

Her interest in hand embroidery work was therefore evinced at an early age, when she was just eight years old. Following her graduation from Senior High School, her embroidery skills improved when she became an apprentice under the great Embroidery Master Wang Wenzu at the Suzhou Embroidery Research Institute.

After obtaining her Certificate as a Craft Artist in 1999, Ms Yao established her own embroidery studio in Zhenhu. She won the Award of Excellence in the Chinese Arts and Crafts Fine Works Exhibition in the same year.
