Farmer and former Mayor enters Parliament

Staff Reporter – Famer and former Mayor-Maureen Pugh

The National Party has confirmed that former Westland District Mayor and West Coast – Tasman electorate candidate Maureen Pugh will enter Parliament in 2016 on the National List. She will replace Tim Groser who quit Parliament to take up his new assignment as Ambassador to the United States of America (see separate story in this section).

Ranked number 51 on the National List, Mrs Pugh had a short stay in Wellington following the 2014 election, just missing out on a seat once special votes were processed.

Mrs Pugh was over the moon when the announcement was made last fortnight.

Strong lobbyist

“I have worked and lobbied hard for these communities for many years. I now look forward to working with my National colleagues to support National’s plan and give West Coast Tasman a strong voice in government,” she said.

“My particular passion will continue to be for the regions, encouraging a diverse and resilient economy with communities that thrive. I have a lot of catching up to do entering Parliament mid-term, but I am up for the challenge,” she said.

Wealthy experience

National Party President Peter Goodfellow welcomed Mrs Pugh to the National Caucus.

“Maureen brings a wealth of experience and a genuine connection with West Coast and Tasman communities that will be a real asset to National. If she brings the same hard work and commitment to the electorate that she showed in last year’s campaign, I am confident Maureen will be very strong voice for West Coast Tasman,” he said.

Mrs Pugh was first elected to the Westland District Council in 1998, serving two terms before becoming the first woman elected as mayor of Westland District. She served in that role for nine years before standing down at the 2013 local body elections.

Living with husband John on their farm in Turiwhate, Mrs Pugh has a family history on the West Coast dating back over 130 years.

She is mother to three adult children and a grandmother of six.
