Festival ushers hope for a better world

Every year I take special pleasure attending Diwali festivals in various parts of the country, enjoying the company of the communities present.

This year, as we celebrate Diwali, I would like to pass on my best wishes to Indian Newslink and thank you for all you do during Diwali and for the rest of the year.

By marking new beginnings and the renewal of life, Diwali symbolises hope for a better world. The triumph of light over darkness and good over evil is an inspirational message for us all.

Like Indian Newslink, and in the spirit of Diwali, I want to see a country that offers the best possible future to all of our families, with educational opportunities, jobs and a strong multicultural society where all New Zealanders are treated with respect.

I would like to acknowledge the contribution of the Indian community in New Zealand and to thank you all for your hard work and the effort you make in enriching our economic, social and cultural life.

Phil Goff is Leader of the Labour Party and Leader of the Opposition in New Zealand Parliament.
