First Indian woman takes high rank in Labour List

Priyanka Radhakrishnan in winning position

Wellington, May 2, 2017

The Labour Party announced its List of Candidates with ranking for the 2017 Election early this morning.

Priyanca Radhakrishnan, who has been with the Party in various capacities over several years, has secured a winning position, ranked Number 11 on the List. There are three other candidates of Indian origin on the List- Jessie Pabla (at 53) Baljit Kaur (63), and Gaurav Sharma (69).

Building the economy

Ms Radhakrishnan will also be the first South Indian to enter Parliament. Born in Kerala, her parents are now settled down in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. As well as English, she speaks fluent Hindi, Malayalam and Tamil, which will be useful in communicating with the people of her Constituency and others.

“Labour will build a successful, sustainable economy through a focus on investment, revitalising a culture of innovation and by attracting industry to our regions.

We must grow our economy from one that is driven by land, banking and speculation to one that is innovative and is of high-value.

The right kind of capital investment is an essential component to growing a sustainable economy,” she said.

High Calibre Candidates

Nigel Haworth, Labour Party President, said: “The Party’s Moderating Committee met over the weekend to consider a wealth of very high calibre candidates for the Party List. We are delighted to present a list that contains 74 talented candidates and provides further renewal to Labour’s caucus.”

The following is a Statement issued by Party Leader Andrew Little:

I am excited that Labour will take into the General Election a strong caucus supported by a fresh team of candidates who reflect New Zealand’s diversity. I am proud and excited to be leading such a dynamic and capable group of candidates into this year’s election. I have said I wanted a Party List that is as reflective and representative of New Zealand as possible. This is a list that achieves that.

Challenges ahead

We need to fix the housing crisis, rebuild our health system and equip our schools to deliver the education that parents and children deserve. Now we have the candidates in place who I’m confident will do a fantastic job convincing voters Labour has the solutions to build a fairer New Zealand. I cannot wait to hit the campaign trail with them.”
