Fog blocks 65 flights in Auckland

RNZ, Auckland, June 30, 2018

Fog restrictions at Auckland Airport have been lifted after weather led to cancellation or delay of about 65 flights.

Fog restrictions were put in place from about 730 am to 1120 am.

About 35 domestic flights were cancelled and 30 delayed.

International flights and those to Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin and Queenstown were not affected.

MetService forecaster Claire Flynn said the clear skies and cool temperatures were creating the fog and was expected to be temporary.

Disruptive Week

“I can see there’s still some fog there at the moment, but as the sun comes up and it starts to warm up, it will dissipate reasonably quickly,” she said.

Ms Flynn said Hamilton and Dunedin also had fog.

t’s been a disruptive week for travellers at Auckland Airport and the flow-on delays to other regional airports because of the fog.

Security breach

On Thursday, there was a security breach at the airport which caused long delays for passengers who had to be re-screened.

The airport was unable to confirm why a passenger jumped the security barrier.
