Government to revisit Partnership Visa Policy

Iain Lees-Galloway
Wellington, November 2, 2019

Editor’s Note: Following our front page story yesterday (Indian Newslink, November 1, 2019) issue, which can he read here), Immigration Minister has issued the following communication to the Indian community. It also refers to the brash and impetuous remarks made by New Zealand First MP Shane Jones (which can be read here).

Following is the Statement of Mr Lees-Galloway:

Like you I am concerned about the results of Immigration New Zealand’s recent clarification of processes around partnership visas and treatment of culturally arranged marriage.

INZ off its own bat

You probably know that there was no government directive involved in this change, Immigration New Zealand (INZ) made an operational decision to ensure that they applied their instructions consistently.

That has caused a lot of concern and I have asked INZ to look into what has happened and  to provide me with urgent advice around culturally arranged marriages and how settings could be improved.

We value our Indian and all migrant communities – you deserve our respect and no one has the right to make inappropriate comments about the community.

The issue of visa processing times has been raised as well. I am not happy about visa delays and have made it clear that I expect Immigration New Zealand to fully focus on bringing processing times down.

They are making progress but I expect further improvement.

Parent Category

Another issue concerning people is the parent category.

As you know, the parent category thresholds was a Coalition decision – we have reopened the category so that is a step forward but I know many are disappointed about the thresholds. They are set to ensure people have enough funds to fully support their parents. This was a coalition decision.

Finally, can I reiterate how much we value your community and the incredible contribution you make to our nation.

Please let me know if you would like me to come and talk with you about these issues and any others you are concerned about.”

Yours sincerely

Hon Iain Lees-Galloway

Minister of Immigration
