Hamiltonians plan Volleyball Tournament

The Hamilton Malayalee Association has invited individuals and teams to participate in its Volleyball Tournament, scheduled to be held at the Te Rapa Sportsdrome located in Ashurst Park on Church Road on Sunday, August 24, 2014.

Known as the ‘A A R Open Volleyball Tournament,’ (the first three letters denoting three deceased youngsters Anuj, Anjo and Richard), the matches will be held from 9 am to 5 pm.

Dilip Kurien, Vice-President of the Association, said that the Tournament is primarily to engage the younger members of the society in sporting activities to help them shape their personality and achieve proper physical fitness.

The theme of the Tournament this year is, “Say No to Drugs, Yes to Life,’ he said.

“The entry fee per team is $50, and the proceeds will be used for good causes. We need community support to spread the importance of promoting the wellbeing of the younger members of the society,” Mr Kurien said.

Anjo (22), Anuj (17) and Richard (12) were killed in a road accident on July 11, 2005 when they were returning with their friends in their car to Hamilton after a holiday in Hastings.

The incident happened outside Taupo.

Anjo, an engineering student at the Waikato University and Anuj, studying in last year of school were the only sons of K J Antony and Annice, while Richard, a primary school student, was the younger of the two sons of Kurian and Gracy Joseph.
