The National Government will amend the statute to make it legal for Sikhs to carry a ‘Kirpan’ (Sword or Knief’ in their person if the National returns to govern after September 23, 2017 general election.
This was stated by Prime Minister Bill English at a fundraising dinner organised by Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi for his Manukau Was Constituency at Alexandra Park in Greenlane Auckland.
Mr English said that Sikhs are peaceful people and partners in the country’s economic progress.
“Kirpan is a part of Sikh faith and we must legalise it being carried by Sikhs for religious purpose. We owe this to Sikhs who have been in New Zealand for more than 100 years” Mr English.
The Kirpan has been an issue in rent times with many Sikhs facing problems at public places. The announcement will undoubtedly appease the community.
