As coronavirus continues to dominate the news, the best thing we can all do is to remain calm.

It is understandable that given the stories in the news, new rules around public gatherings and travel that you may have some concerns, however I urge you to follow the advice of public health officials.

The unfortunate reality is our elderly citizens are most at risk from this virus and therefore we must take extra care to look after them.

Simple preventive measures

Preventative measures that can be taken by avoiding large gatherings, maintain social distancing and practicing hygiene. All non-essential travel should also be avoided.

I can understand how this may be difficult changes to adapt to in our community but when it comes to this current health situation it is important we all play our part to stop the virus spreading.

National supports the border control restrictions that have been put in place.

This includes every person entering New Zealand being required to spend two weeks in self-isolation. We also support measures which have been put in place around large gatherings.

Constructive engagement

National is working constructively with the Government during this outbreak. We want to make sure that New Zealanders are being kept safe and are getting the best advice.

But we also have an important role to play in holding the Government to account.

We won’t be afraid to ask the tough questions when we believe things can be done better.

Our response as a country needs to be swift and comprehensive.

Vigorous defence

Our isolated position at the bottom of the world is an asset and we should be vigorously defending our borders to slow the spread of this virus. The reality is that this has become an unprecedented event and we need to work together as a country to ensure this virus does not continue to spread.

Remember to wash your hands, practice social distancing, listen to the advice of health professionals and stay calm. Let’s all look out for each other, we will get through this.
