Wellingtonians will mark the Birth Centenary of one of the greatest leaders of all times, former South African President Nelson Mandela on Wednesday, July 18, 2018.

A series of activities will be held jointly by the South African High Commission and the Wellington Interfaith Council in association with the Wellington City Council.

Getting to know Mandela

The day-long event will commence at 10 am with ‘Work hard at your Education’ programme at the Public Libraries in Lower Hutt, Porirua and Wellington Central.

Quoting Mr Mandela as saying, “Education is the most powerful weapon to change the world,” an official invitation called on parents and caregivers to take their children to the programme.

“This would be an occasion to learn more about Nelson Mandela.”

Friendly Soccer

“Do things for your community and be kind to other people,” is the message of Mr Mandela that will be reflected at the Civic Square with a friendly Soccer game hosted by Capital Football from 12 pm to 1 pm.

“People with winter clothing to spare for use by those in need can drop them in the box provided at the venue. Find an opportunity to serve for 67 minutes in your neighbourhoods in honour of Nelson Mandela,” the organisers said.

Interfaith Event

“Have courage when things are tough,” is the theme of an Interfaith event, scheduled to be held at Te Wharewakka (2 Taranaki Street, Wellington) from 530 pm to 7 pm.

“The programme will celebrate the life of Nelson Mandela, a leader who symbolised courage in the face of conflict and opposition,” the organisers said.
