Visitor visa holders may apply for a variation of conditions to undertake seasonal work in the Tasman region, which has been declared as a ‘Seasonal Labour Shortage’ region.

A Ministry of Social Development declaration has said that Visitor Visa holders (including those from Visa-Waiver countries) may apply for a variation of conditions which will enable them to undertake seasonal work for up to six weeks in the Tasman region.

Types of Jobs

Seasonal work includes planting, maintaining, harvesting and picking crops in the horticulture or viticulture industries.

Applications for variations of conditions should be made on the paper application form ‘INZ 1020 Application for a variation of conditions.’

The fee for a variation of visitor visa conditions is NZ$170.

Visitor Visa-holders are not usually allowed to work. or to study for more than three months. In some cases, however, Visitor-Visa holders can change the conditions of their Visa to allow longer-term study or seasonal work.

If you have a Visitor Visa and want to study, you can study for less than three months without varying your Visitor Visa. If you want to study for longer, you should apply for a student visa.

Guardian of a Student

If you have a Guardian of a Student Visitor Visa and want to study part-time for more than three months, you can apply to vary the conditions of your existing visitor visa.

To vary your conditions, you must provide (a) ‘Application for a variation of conditions or a Variation of Travel Conditions’ (INZ1020) PDF 290KB and (b) Application fee

Seasonal Work

If the Ministry of Social Development declares a seasonal labour shortage, you can apply to vary the conditions of your visitor visa to allow six weeks of seasonal work in the region where there is a shortage.

The Ministry of Social Development has declared a labour shortage in the following areas:

Hawke’s Bay: March 12 to April 29, 2018

Tasman: April 5 to May 18, 2018.

To vary your conditions, you must provide: (a) ‘Application for a variation of conditions or a Variation of Travel Conditions’ (INZ1020) PDF 290KB and (b) Application fee

Visitors can only undertake seasonal work once each visit to New Zealand.

Guardian of a student

If you have a Guardian of a student visitor visa and want to work part-time, you can apply to vary the conditions of your existing visitor visa. To vary your conditions, you must provide (a) Offer of Employment (b) Employment Agreement (c) ‘Employer Supplementary Form’ (INZ 1113) (d) ‘Application for a variation of conditions or a Variation of Travel Conditions’ (INZ1020) (c) Application fee (d) ‘Employer supplementary form’ (INZ 1113)PDF 258KB (e) ‘Application for a variation of conditions or a Variation of Travel Conditions’ (INZ1020)PDF 290KB (f) Application Fee

Guardians of Student Visitor Visa-holders can only work Monday to Friday between 930 am and 230 pm.
