Seminar on Finding Employment in New Zealand

Auckland, December 31, 2017

Students, new migrants and those seeking employment may find a seminar scheduled to be held in Auckland next week useful.

Adon Kumar, an English Language Lecturer and Employment Coach will conduct the Seminar under the theme, ‘Finding Employment in New Zealand,’ on Sunday, January 7, 2018 at 16 Waverley Street (Level Three), Off Queen Street in Auckland’s Central Business District from 10 am to 2 pm.

The charges are $25 per person including Morning Tea and Lunch.

Auckland Tamil Association is organising the Seminar which will cover relevant topics such as ‘How to Write a CV,’ ‘How to Write a Covering Letter’ and ‘Job Interviews.’

“Students who are looking for employment now and in the future, will find the Seminar a good guidance,” Vai Ravindran, President of Auckland Tamil Association said.

Irrelevant expressions

In his article, ‘Competence in English language creates pathway to success,’ which appeared in Indian Newslink (October 15, 2017), Mr Kumar had said that migrants who come to New Zealand from different cultures sometimes make mistakes in their speaking and writing because they are used to a particular way of communicating in their cultural context where age, status, seniority, political system and other factors influence or dictate the choice of language style.

“I routinely see phrases such as ‘Respected Sir,’ ‘Yours Humbly,’ ‘To Whom It May Concern,’ which are inappropriate in the New Zealand socio-cultural and employment context,” he had said.

Importance of Language

Mr Kumar said that language is important for success in job applications.

“Employers are smart enough to know how good your English is from the time you make the first communication and through all the stages of the job search process. That includes your first email, your first phone call, your CV and Cover Letter, the way you communicate at your Job Interview and how you communicate at your workplace.

Qualifications and a good pass mark in an English test may make you linguistically competent but not guarantee Communicative Competence,” he said.

Mr Kumar discusses migrants’ issues on his Facebook Page and conducts Free English Lessons every Sunday at 1120 am on Planet FM 104.6.

Migrants find his Language and Coaching classes valuable guides to success.
