Police are investing the circumstances that led to a shooting incident in the South Auckland suburb of Papatoetoe during the early hours of Monday, April 20, 2020.

Counties Manukau Police District Commander Superintendent Jill Rogers said that a Post-Mortem examination will be held tomorrow (Tuesday).

According to available information, Police were called to Central Avenue in Papatoetoe at 1 am after multiple reports of a man in rampage with a machete.

Superintendent Rogers said that the Police received 13 separate calls from worried and scared residents regarding the man’s behaviour, which included using a machete to damage cars and powerlines.

Disruptive and destructive

“He also used the machete to attack a number of houses by smashing in windows. Immediately prior to Police arrival, the man was at one address where he had smashed two large windows and was in the process of smashing the Venetian Blinds. The occupants were home at the time and were terrified thinking that the man was going to gain access to the house and attack them. The man was unknown to any of the occupants at the address. The first Police Officer arrived at this time and was able to prevent the man from gaining entry to this address,” she said.

Superintendent Rogers said that the man reportedly used the machete to smash windows, damage cars and cut powerlines.

“A Police Officer arrived in the area shortly after and began engaging with him. Despite repeated requests from our Officer to the man to put down his weapon, he has continued to advance on the Officer and he was shot,” she said.

It is understood that the man was provided immediate medical assistance but died at the scene.

Superintendent Rogers said that scene examination, and interviews with a number of witnesses will form a part of the Police investigation.

Tragic outcome

“The Officer is being well-supported by welfare services and their colleagues. This is a tragic outcome for all involved and our sympathies are with the deceased man’s family. We will ensure that Victim Support is available to them and will support them through this difficult process.

“Every day, Police Officers are put into complex and fast-moving situations where they have to make quick decisions in situations where there is risk to their lives and to members of the public. No Police Officer comes to work wanting to end up in a situation like this. Their welfare is paramount to New Zealand Police and we have steps in place to make sure they are well supported,” she said.

As per standard practice, Police have launched two investigations into the shooting and have notified the Independent Police Conduct Authority (IPCA).
