Three Carnatic Music masters to perform in Auckland

When a vocalist whose expertise extends to Ghatam, a Violinist from a distinguished lineage and a Mridangist par excellence get together on stage, the Concert that follows can be nothing short of heavy downpour of pure Carnatic music.

That is what could be on store at a forthcoming event being organised by Rasikas New Zealand and Sangeetha Bharathi School of Music on Saturday, April 27, 2019 at 530 pm at the Auckland Performing Arts Centre (TAPAC) located at 100 Motions Road, Western Springs in Central Auckland.

A S Murali, M A Sundareswaran and T R Sundaresan are the trio whose performance is expected to draw calls of encore item after item. Their repertoire is legendry and additionally, the maiden appearance of Murali in New Zealand has raised widespread expectations.

Vidwan A S Murali

A S Murali is a multi-faceted artiste, well-rated for his prowess in Vocal Music and on Ghatam, one of the most fascinating instruments in Carnatic Music.

Born and raised in a family of music aficionado, he has held on his own as an artiste of high proficiency for more than 25 years. Beginning his musical career under the tutelage of his father the Late A K Sundaram Iyer, he was later trained by his paternal uncle the Late (Violin) Master A K Ganesha Iyer and Kalaimamani S Rajeswari.

Intrigued by the sound of Ghatam, he sought the knowledge of its nuances and performance from Maestro the Late T V Vasan, who was enthralled by his expertise in Vocal Music. He moved A S Murali to the pedagogy of P S Narayanaswamy, satisfying the dream of his father.

Vidwan Parur M A Parur Sundareswaran

M A Sundareswaran was born in the famous Parur family of violinists.

He started playing the Violin from an early age under the guidance and tutelage of his grandfather Parur A Sundaram Iyer. Later, he was taught by his father Parur M S Anantharaman and uncle Parur M S Gopalakrishnan.

Sundareswaran had a unique opportunity of having his maiden performance with his grandfather in 1965 at Shri Thyagaraja Sangeetha Vidwath Samajam, Mylapore, Chennai.

He has been performing for several decades as a supporting artiste and in several violin duets and quartets with his father, uncle, brother and son.

Vidwan T R Sundaresan

T R Sundaresan has more than 40 years of experience as a Mridangist.

He had initial training from his father, the Late  T V Rangarajan and later adopted the traditional method of learning  (Gurukulavasam) for advance training under Mridangam maestro Dr Yella Venkateswara Rao for 10 years.

Sundaresan has served as Professor at the India Kalashetra Foundation Chennai, a pioneering institution and at the Singapore Indian Fine Arts Society for almost 30 years.
