As Aryaman Sethi parked his car at the Highbury Shopping Mall in Auckland’s Northshore suburb of Birkenhead on Monday, October 22, 2018, the first thing he saw was a young woman trying to chop her fingers off with an axe.
It was about 530 pm on Labour Day holiday.
She was sitting in front of the Mall entrance in full view of people entering and leaving the Shopping Centre and no one seemed to have noticed or cared about this young woman.
Attempt at self-harm
Aryaman rushed towards her and tried to calm his own nerves first, for any action on his part could result in the woman either hurting herself with the axe and swinging it at him.
Aryaman took a few blows before he managed to take the axe away.
And then he found that the young woman’s hand was bleeding profusely.
He then asked a passer-by to call for an Ambulance.
Help sought
“As I was pressing against the wound that she had sustained, the young woman told me that she was HIV Positive. She appeared very tense and depressed,” Aryaman said.
About 25 minutes later, the Police also arrived and took her away.
The Police thanked Aryaman for his courage and presence of mind.
His good deed did not surprise the Titirangi Community in West Auckland where Aryaman works as Assistant Manager at GAS Kaurilands.
Interest in Police
A native of Dehradun in Uttarakhand, Aryaman hopes to join the New Zealand Police someday.
He loves to workout and as a 19-year-old, he drove on his Harley Davidson from Kashmir in the North to Kanyakumari, the southern-most tip of India, covering a distance of about 3450 kilometres.
