Road users in the Beresford Square and Pitt Street areas of Central Auckland will need to plan for changes in the New Year as the Link Alliance accelerates construction of the City Rail Link project’s Karangahape Station.

From Monday, January 6, 2019, vehicles will no longer be able to access Pitt Street from Beresford Square and on the same day, Pitt Street will be narrowed to one lane in each direction between Greys Avenue and Karangahape Road.

Businesses in Beresford Square are remaining open for business, and wayfinding signage will direct pedestrians and cyclists to their locations.

Changes inevitable

“Without the traffic changes, there will not be enough room for us to build the Karangahape Station as safely and as quickly as possible. There will be disruption, but we are committed to doing all we can to tell people what is happening so that they can plan their travel in advance,” Link2 Alliance Deputy Project Manager Dale Burtenshaw said.

Drivers will still be able to access Hopetoun Street, Samoa House Lane and Day Street from Beresford Square. The Square will remain open to walkers and cyclists, sometimes with short detours to keep everyone safe.

Access for emergency services based in Pitt Street – Fire and Ambulance – will not be affected by the works.

Access to private properties

Access to private properties will also be maintained. The Pitt Street bus-stop outside the Central Methodist Parish has been moved temporarily to outside Greys Avenue to maintain existing bus services.

“We understand that construction for projects of this scale can impact road users. The Link Alliance and Auckland Transport will continue to work closely to minimise disruption in the Karangahape Road area and to maintain reliable public transport,” Mr Burtenshaw said.

Beresford Square closure

Beresford Square will become one of the two entrances/exits for the Karangahape Station (the other will be in Mercury Lane) and the vehicle closure on  January 6, 2019 will be permanent. The current on-street parking spaces in Beresford Square will not be available and the Wilson Carpark at the intersection of Hopetoun Street and Beresford Square will also close.

Alternative parking locations are available at Day Street, Greys Avenue, St James Street, Auckland Transport’s Upper Queen Street Car Park and Wilson Parking on Cross Street and Mercury Lane. When the station construction is finished, Beresford Square will be redeveloped as a more attractive public space for Aucklanders to enjoy.

Pitt Street

The Pitt Street lane closures are necessary for the Link Alliance to divert utilities like gas and water away from the station’s construction site.

This work involves hydro-excavating and digging deep trenches.

The Link Alliance will maintain access to all driveways along Pitt Street, including those to the Fire and Ambulance Stations

Poynton Terrace will remain open with both right and left turns onto Pitt Street available.

The Link Alliance is responsible for construction of CRL stations and tunnels for City Rail Link Ltd.

“We have had great support from the community in the Karangahape area and will continue to work with them to manage the impacts of our construction. We have a number of measures in place to contain construction noise and vibration. The wooden hoardings going up later in the year will keep our sites safe and help to minimise noise, they’ll also include Perspex windows so that people can see what’s going on,” Mr Burtenshaw said.
