Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Winston Peters will inaugurate the Fifth Annual New Zealand National Hindu Conference at Sudima Airport Hotel Auckland on Saturday, May 4, 2019.
‘Stronger Communities, Stronger New Zealand,’ is the theme of the Conference, which the organisers said, “is a highly relevant conversation not only for today, but for shaping the future of New Zealand.”
“Hindus are model contributors and integrators in all countries around the globe and New Zealand is no different. The Hindu community has been contributing to New Zealand in education, economy, health, agriculture, media, technology, entertainment, and many other,” they said.
Conference Coordinator Nitika Sharma said that the forthcoming Conference would showcase the contributions that Hindus make to New Zealand and celebrating our success.
Cusp of Change
“We are at the cusp of change in New Zealand which is reliant on community leaders that serve as role models,” she said.
“Leaders from 35 organisations, community groups and temples will be present at the conference discussing, deliberating and forming future pathways for best contributing to a stronger country”, she added.
Ms Sharma said that the Hindu community has been well received in New Zealand and has integrated with the local culture whilst maintaining its traditions. The organisation of the conference is one such example.
“The Organising Committee comprises young people who have worked as volunteers. The Hindu community is the fastest growing religious group as per the latest official census data available and is the second largest religious following in New Zealand,” she said.
The Conference will provide an opportunity for networking, connecting and inspiring each other; portray the strong grassroot connections that Hindu organisations have with the diaspora in New Zealand; show how Hindu temples have become a focal point of promoting Hindu Dharma and making it relevant to 1st and 2nd generation Kiwi-Hindus; celebrate the contribution of youth in promoting and strengthening Hindu Dharma and connect government agencies to the community.
Panel discussions and presentations will focus on deliberating and discussing how best to continue to strengthen the communities to make a stronger New Zealand.
