An organisation that dedicates itself to the welfare of the senior members of the society throughout the year will honour them at a special function next week.
Shanthi Niwas Charitable Trust will commemorate ‘World Elder Abuse Awareness Day,’ on June 22 at the Fickling Convention Centre in Three Kings, highlighting the importance of serving the elderly in the evening of their life.
Project Manager Nilima Venkat said that although the international day is marked in many part of the world on June 15, the event is being held a week later in Auckland for the convenience of the members, volunteers and others connected with the Trust.
“The Programme, scheduled to be held between 1030 am and 230 pm, will include speeches and presentations on issues relating to abuse of elderly people, raising public awareness of the problem and seeking effective solutions. Entertainment and food will also be a part of the event,” she said.
The changing lifestyle, environment and the cultural ethos of New Zealand are stated to be factors that affect the physical and mental fitness of aged parents and grandparents who feel neglected at home. Organisations like Shanti Niwas provide avenues for such elders to meet, play indoor games, interact and amuse themselves.
Mrs Venkat said that the Trust aims to help build a society free of abuse.
“Shanti Niwas is a non-profit organisation and has been serving Indian and South Asian seniors and their families for the past 19 years to ensure that they are valued and treasured by society,” she said.
