Manvendra Sharma, a former student of the Manukau Institute of Technology married Deepa Chaturvedi in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, India on January 29, 2016.
Manvendra’s friend Manpreet Singh Brar was also present at the wedding.
I was extremely pleased to attend the wedding along with my husband Pradeep Kapoor.
Almost seven years ago, I wrote in Indian Newslink (July 1, 2009) that Manvendra and Manpreet were involved in a terrible traffic accident on April 14, 2009 when their van, carrying six other students, capsized on their way from Waikato to Thames.
They were first admitted to the Intense Care Unit at Waikato Hospital and later shifted to the Auckland Hospital. Manvendra was confined to the wheel chair for a long time because of spinal injury. Manpreet also suffered serious injuries.
We arranged for the visit of Manvendra’s father Murarilal Sharma and Manpreet’s sister Harpreet Kaur to New Zealand. Many generous people including Pradeep and me helped Manvendra continue his education. He is today a Probationary Office at a large commercial bank in New Delhi, while Manpreet is employed as a Marine Engineer in a shipping company.
Suman Kapoor is a community worker based in Hamilton and was the Founder-President of the Waikato Chapter of the Global Organisation of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO), the first entity in New Zealand. She was recently elected to the post of GOPIO International Coordinator (Oceania) with jurisdiction over Australia, New Zealand and Fiji Chapters of the largest Indian organisation in the world. She and her husband Pradeep Kapoor were honoured with the ‘Hind Rattan Award’ in Delhi on January 25, 2016.
