Camp prepares children for the morrow

The fact that children can be helped to mould their character and personality through positive thinking and taught leadership qualities by example was yet again proved at the recently concluded annual summer camp of the Bhartiya Samaj Charitable Trust.

Year after year, the Trust organises a five-day, event-filled programme for children, which witnesses new activities designed to promote their overall wellbeing.

Trust Chairman Jeet Suchdev, Education Chairperson Roopa Suchdev, other Trustees, members of the Executive Committee, volunteers, parents and elders get together for the project that aims to create generations of quality children.

More than 100 children aged between five and 16 attended the camp held at the Mt Roskill War Memorial Hall and the adjacent premises of the Trust from January 14 to 18, 2013.

Varied activities

The summer camp this year included activities that effectively help in personality development, team spirit and team work, and most important of all, enabling the young minds to attempt their best in building skills and a good physique.

Children attending the programme were taught a series of skills including public speaking, arts and crafts, music, dance, drawing and physical exercise, the last of which was fun-filled with the expert guidance of Ella Kumar, an elected member of the Puketapapa Local Board.

Not that it was all work- there was plenty of play, food, amusement, visit to Butterfly Creek, Buttermilk Farm and sports.

“Badminton and football formed a part of the camp this year, with expert coaching (respectively) by Brent Miller of Auckland Badminton Association and Steve Roberts and Faye Walker of the Auckland Football Federation.

“We are grateful to Gurmukh Singh of Prepared Produce for his generous contribution of fruits and vegetables for children at the camp,” Mr Suchdev said.
