The College of Medicine, Nursing & Health Sciences is offering a new graduate programme in Nutrition & Dietetics as a part of the national objective to promote better public health.

College Dean Professor Ian Rouse said the course subjects would include lifestyle diseases, food security, Health promotion and community education.

“In Fiji and the Pacific, we face unprecedented challenges when dealing with Non-Communicable Diseases such as Diabetes, Hypertension, Ischemic Heart Disease, Stroke, Rheumatic Heart Disease and various types of Cancer.

“Poor eating habits and nutrition intake contribute to the incidence of such diseases in the Pacific. According to a Health Ministry Survey in 2000, mortality rate due to non-communicable diseases was 82%,” Professor Rouse said.
