Last fortnight, the Police released the annual crime statistics which saw a 6.7% decrease in crime across the country per head of population.
Across Counties-Manukau, recorded offences dropped by 9.5% per head of population in 2010. In 2009, the crime rate increased by 3% and hence these figures are very good news.

It is great to be part of a Government that is delivering on our promise to tackle violent crime, support our police, and put victims at the heart of the justice system.
The drop in crime shows that criminals are seeing more blue uniforms, gangs and burglars are being targeted, and the worst, repeat violent offenders will be locked up for longer.
National has passed 18 new laws to help crack down on crime.
This includes our effective ‘Three Strikes Policy’ for the most serious and violent offenders. Already, 229 offenders have been convicted under their First Strike.
Another important change made by this Government has been our work to strengthen the sentencing and bail laws in New Zealand.
National has given the courts the power to impose maximum jail sentences with no parole, and tougher sentences for crimes against children.
With over 300 more Police now on our streets, I think the Police are doing a great job in our community.
But there is still work to be done. The National-led Government is currently working through a review of the Bail system to further ensure that the public is kept safe.
We have already reversed Labour’s 2007 changes that made it easier for people to get Bail. Now we are looking at other matters like whether people charged with a serious offence such as murder should be eligible for bail.
