Hamiltonians embrace elders

Three organisations based in Hamilton have got together to honour elders in the society and express their love and care for them.

Indianz Global Women & Family Group, GOPIO Waikato Inc and Kirikiriroa Multicultural Council Inc will observe ‘Elder Abuse Awareness Day’ on June 15 at the Celebrating Age Centre, 30 Victoria Street, Hamilton.

The programme, which includes dinner, will commence at 6 pm.

Community Leader Suman Kapoor, who was honoured with the ‘Times Now ICICI Bank NRI of the Year 2014’ for Philanthropy in Mumbai recently (Indian Newslink, May 15, 2014), said that the UN has designated June 15 as the International Day of Action as the world voices its opposition to the abuse of older people.

“Purple represents World Elder Abuse Awareness Day denoting wisdom, dignity, independence and creativity. It is all about respect and opening up, support and action.

Lawyer Josephine Naidoo will speak on ‘Law and Elder Abuse and Neglect,” she said.

Further details can be obtained from Suman Kapoor on (07) 9744267.
