India visit benefits Kiwi food companies

An ANZ Bank organised visit to India has opened up new vistas of engagement and expansion for New Zealand companies, with a number of them securing orders, ANZ Head of India Relations Sunil Kaushal said.

According to him, Kiwi entrepreneurs are beginning to see the benefits of right connections made through right channels with right business partners in India.

He led a delegation of officials from 13 New Zealand based companies involved in the meat, dairy, wine, fruit and juice industries in April.

“The group visited Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore and attended 109 meetings with prospective buyers, customers, business partners and Kiwi companies already working in India. ANZ India, New Zealand Trade & enterprise, New Zealand High Commissioner to India, KPMG and AZB & Partners conducted business workshops.

“The goal was to give customers a better understanding of how to do business in India and connect them with ANZ’s networks in India that will help them expand their business into this enormous market,” Mr Kaushal said.

New connections

He said that the eight-day trip produced a number of new connections for several customers and that they had secured new orders for their produce, while others built relationships that are expected to lead to more export orders.

“For example, Heath Wilkins of Birdhurst Ltd/Golden Bay Fruit Limited doubled the number of containers of apples he exports to the Indian market by cementing existing contacts and establishing new ones during the trip,” Mr Kaushal said.

ANZ is the only New Zealand bank that has its branch and offices in India, exploiting the potential offered by the Asian economic giant.

India is one of Asia’s fastest-growing economies with a burgeoning middle class that accounts for 560 million. Rapid urbanisation is changing Indian dietary habits, creating significant demand for protein and specialty foods, Mr Kaushal said.

Enormous potential

“The opportunities for New Zealand exporters are enormous. However, capitalising on the demand requires them to have a good understand of India, great relationships with business partners, and a sound knowledge of the products Indians want to buy.”

“With a presence in 32 countries, including India, ANZ has the networks to help New Zealand businesses reach out to new markets and new opportunities.”

Despite a hectic schedule with an average of 13 meetings per day, the group took time to visit the Taj Mahal in Agra (pictured here), attend a Premier League match between the Delhi Daredevils and Mumbai Indians at the Ferozashah Kotla Stadium in Delhi and pray at the Dawn Service in Mumbai to commemorate ANZAC Day.

ANZ is the Title Sponsor (jointly with Radio Tarana) of the Indian Newslink Sir Anand Satyanand Lecture, scheduled to be held at Stamford Plaza Hotel, Auckland from 630 pm on Monday, July 29, 2013. Vino Ramayah, Executive Chairman of Medtech Global Limited will be the Guest Speaker, with ‘Transparency: Myth or Reality’ as the theme of his address.
