Manmohan Singh of Auckland is the only person from the Indian community to be featured in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List this year.
A Government announcement issued on June 3 said that Mr Singh will receive a Queen’s Service Medal (QSM) for his services to the Indian community.
According to available information, Mr Singh has been associated with the Sikh community in New Zealand for more than 30 years. He joined the New Zealand Sikh Society, Hamilton soon after his arrival from his native Punjab in India in 1981 and later became the Founding Member of the New Zealand Sikh Society, Auckland.
He has been involved with the Indian Association and the New Zealand Sikh Society since 1981. Elected to the post of Vice-President of the New Zealand Sikh Council in 2007, he also served as the Auditor of the Takanini and Otahuhu Gurdwara.
He was involved in the construction of the first Gurdwara in Auckland in 1986.
Social Service
Mr Singh was a member and Vice President of the Country Section of the New Zealand Central Indian Association.
He was a Member of the Committee that reviewed and amended the Constitution of the Association in 2012, a year in which he established the Retailers Business Association and became its President.
Mr Singh assists new immigrants in their efforts to settle down and understand New Zealand’s lifestyle and culture.
Mr Singh is currently Vice-President of the Manukau Indian Association and Chairman of the Des Punjab Sports and Cultural Centre New Zealand.
