Motion for health inquiry fails in Fijian Parliament

Rachel Nath

Strong allegations of poor, pathetic and shameful public health services were made by Opposition MP Biman Prasad in Fijian Parliament on Friday, March 9, 2018.

Introducing a Motion, he claimed that there has been no improvement on service delivery and that conditions have deteriorated.

“Even the expectation of clean and hygiene conditions in our hospitals are just too high an expectation from this Government. During a recent visit to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital Emergency Unit, there were lack of beds which is another matter, as patients are told to get off their beds and sit on chairs,” Dr Prasad said.

But Health Minister Rosy Akbar did not agree and hit back.

She said that the Government is working on improving the public health service and Opposition must learn to be patient.

“This motion could have been bought to Parliament in 2014, 2015 or 2016. They bring this suddenly and we on this side of the house would like to question the motives. It is very easy to play on the emotions of people,” she said.

Ms Akbar also highlighted the progress of the health services and infrastructure.

She accused the Opposition of selective sight, choosing to ignore the work carried out by Government.

“I urge Prasad to go and speak to the hundreds of people who go through the hospitals every day and by saying this I think he has disrespected the medical personals as they are in the business of saving lives,” she said.

Dr Prasad cleared the allegations stating that he does not blame the health professionals for the current service delivery.

All these claims follow the motion brought forth by Dr Prasad who proposed a Bipartisan Committee to conduct an inquiry into the public health and medical system.

The motion was defeated with 28 to 15, with seven abstentions.
