No ‘Super Police’ for Super City

The current district system of Police administration will continue in the greater Auckland region.

Assistant Police Commissioner (Auckland) Allan Boreham said that while Auckland had become a Super City, there were no plans for a Super Police Force.

The three existing Districts (Auckland City, Counties Manukau and Waitemata) are concentrating their efforts on crime prevention, without reducing the ability to respond to incidents, he said.

But a number of services such as Human Resources, Business Services and Operational Services (such as Road Policing, Crime Services and Specialist Units) would be shared.

“Geographically based, public-facing parts of Auckland police are delivering really good service. The three-district model will remain,” he said.

According to Mr Boreham, Aucklanders have been showing increasing confidence in the police force that accounts for a complement of 3800.

“We must remain sustainable in a more difficult financial time and be able to do the work as well as we have or better.

“The most effective ways to release more resources to the front line are through reduced duplication in the back office and streamlined managerial roles,” he said.
