Rotarian wins District Award

A community worker has been honoured by the Rotary movement in recognition of her leadership qualities and initiative in social service.

Rotary Club of Auckland Harbourside President Shefali Mehta received the ‘Pushing the Boundaries Award’ from Rotary District (9920) Governor Ron Seeto at the combined Rotary District (9920 & 9940) Conference held in Rotorua on April 28.

Mr Seeto said that Mrs Mehta took up the challenge of Rotary International President Sakuji Tanaka to organise a community Forum or a Project to promote peace.

“Rotary Club of Auckland Harbourside was the first club in the District to organise a Peace and Conflict Resolution Forum in September 2012 under her leadership. In addition, the Club has been involved in a number of other community welfare activities,” he said.

Rotary Club of Harbourside raised $80,000 through a number of events including Diwali and Chinese New Year for such charitable organisations as Starship, Auckland Medical Research Foundation, Kidney for Kids and Foundation for the Education of Needy Children (Fenc) Fiji Trust.

The Club has also donated monies to the Rotary Foundation and Rotary Polio Eradication Fund, Burn Prevention Education Programme in South Pacific.

Mrs Mehta said that the Award belonged to everyone who had worked on the community and charitable projects.

“Such recognition motivates us to do more and do better and serve the community, including less fortunate people,” she said.
