Seniors mark another anniversary

The fact that senior members of the community strike a unique bond that brings them together as a family was testified at the anniversary get together of the Bhartiya Samaj Charitable Trust in Auckland last month.

Member of the Senior Citizens Wing, marking the 11th anniversary of their grouping, recalled how the organisation has grown over the years.

“We were just a handful of members as Trust Chairman Jeet Suchdev established the wing in 2000. There are more than 300 of us calling this a second home. We meet, exchange information and spend useful time,” a senior member said.

Mr Suchdev was overwhelmed by the remark.

“It has been a long and eventful journey. The number of senior citizens has been growing steadily year after year. I am grateful to the leaders of the community, Government officials and all those who have helped our Senior Wing grow,” he said, speaking at the anniversary celebrations held at the Mr Roskill War Memorial Hall on May Road, where the Wing acquired its flight.

Among those present were National MP Dr Jackie Blue, City Councillor Cathy Casey, former Deputy Mayor Dr Bruce Hucker, Local Board Member Ella Kumar and community leaders.

The Group’s activities include fellowship and friendship, yoga, entertainment, outings and picnics, health checks, mutual support and organising and attending religious and social festivals.
