‘West Indians’ rise against family violence

People of Indian Origin (PIO) in general and those from Fiji in particular residing in West Auckland will launch their annual ‘Fiji Indian Family Violence Campaign’ at the Kelston Community Centre (Corner of Awaroa & Great North Roads) on Sunday, November 24.

The event will commence at 1030 am and conclude with lunch at 1230 pm.

Waitakere Indian Association (WIA) is leading the campaign in partnership with the Waitakere Anti-Violence Essential Services (WAVES), New Police, Auckland Council, Settling In and Social Development Ministry.

WIA Executive Committee Member Manoj Tahal said that the Campaign would include radio advertisements and interviews, posters and magnetic notices.

“This launch is an important milestone for the Fiji Indian community and followed the workshop held last year to raise awareness on family violence and discuss how the community could take action. Feedback from the workshop was clear that family violence was a serious issue facing the Indo-Fijian community and that any response must be tailored for and by the community,” he said.
