Workshop on family violence coming up

The rising incidence of family violence in the Indian community has prompted the Waitakere Indian Association (WIA) to organise a workshop to enhance awareness and openly discuss the connected issues.

It will be held at the Kelston Community Centre (135 Awaroa Road) in Glendene, West Auckland from 930 am on June 10, 2012.

Thousands of Indo Fijians have made West Auckland their home.

WIA has taken up the Workshop as a pilot project, working in partnership with the Auckland Council, Social Development Ministry and the New Zealand Police.

The Workshop will consider settlement and adaptation issues of Indo-Fijian families in West Auckland.

Community leaders and officials of government agencies will speak on the impact of family violence and how the community can work in partnership with government and non-government agencies to assure safety and security for the resident families.

As well as men and women from ordinary homes, the Workshop is expected to attract the participation of religious leaders from the Hindu, Muslim, Christian and Sikh communities.

The organisers encourage women to attend in large numbers to give feedback and suggestions on the ways and means of controlling family violence.

Attendance is restricted to invitees and those registering in advance.
