Aotearoa Fund offers $1 million for sports and recreation

Charitable trusts, educational institutions, incorporated societies and many others may be able to obtain funding being provided by Tu Manawa Active Aotearoa Fund.

Sport Auckland and Aktive (Auckland Sports and Recreation) are managing the Fund which has provision up to $997,968.80 in the Sport Auckland Region, defined as Central Auckland and Howick in East Auckland.

The First Funding Round, which began on August 24, 2020, ends on October 12, 2020.

The Second Round will open on February 1, 2021 and conclude on March 29, 2021.

Fast funding applications up to a maximum of $10,000 can be made at any time but the Fund managers will follow stringent eligibility criteria.

About Tū Manawa Active Aotearoa Fund

Tū Manawa Active Aotearoa provides funding for programmes or projects delivering play, active recreation and sport experiences for Tamariki and Rangatahi (Children and Youth).

These may be new or already operating. 

Fund managers said that Research has shown that there are some groups who are more at risk of missing out or being less active. These include people living with a disability, in higher deprivation communities and girls and young women. Programmes or projects that reach these groups will be prioritised for funding.

Eligibility criteria

Examples of who can apply:

Hapū, Iwi, Marae, Māori organisations; Primary, Intermediate schools, Kura, Secondary Schools (Wharekura), Tertiary Education (Whare Wānanga); Charitable Trusts; Regional or Local Councils

Incorporated Societies; For-profit businesses, commercial organisations and social enterprises.

Examples of who cannot apply:

The Fund has specified that national organisations that already receive Partnership Investment from Sport NZ, government agencies and their regional branches (such as Ministry of Health, Oranga Tamariki); Early Learning Services; professional or semi-professional sports teams and organisations and individuals will not be eligible.

About the Fund

Tu Manawa Active Aotearoa Fund is an Activation Fund established to help cover programmes or service delivery costs. Such costs could include programme or project delivery (such as venue or equipment hire, transport to the event), equipment (as part of a programme or project), officials (where required for the delivery) and delivery staff wages (such as Activity Leader of Coordinator).

Applications must be for a programme or project for up to a maximum of 12 months (i.e. applications cannot be for costs incurred over a 12-month delivery period).
